The decisions we make, once we receive Christ as our Savior, impact the kind of freedom we can experience in Christ. When Jesus asks us to take up our cross, He's asking us to take responsibility and ownership over our sinful nature. Because the Holy Spirit lives within us, we have the power through Him to overcome our sinful nature, no longer being a slave to sin but becoming a slave to righteousness.
