Mysteries of the Bible: Love
Ahavah, Raya, Dod and Agape. These are all different kinds of love, and in the Bible, love is used 526 times! The question is, does God love us with just ONE type of love?
We only have one word to express love in English, and we use it A-LOT! But in the Bible, love is expressed in MANY different ways, and it means something a little different. To love someone was to sacrifice for someone, even if they didn’t do anything for you in return. Here's a few words in hebrew that explain this.
Ahavah. It means “I will give.” You love so much that you Can’t Stop giving, no matter what. This love is all about action. You love, so you act. This is the foundation of all other forms of love.
Raya is the love for your friend. Your best friend, who you can tell anything to and enjoy hanging around. There’s lots of laughter, joy and trust here.
Dod is the kind of physical love you show by holding someone’s hand or hugging them. Sometimes you even want to give them a kiss.
Agape is the love between God and his family. The love that makes you feel like you belong with God. It’s unconditional love, that means no matter what, we are loved and a part of God’s family.
SO, God shows his love for us in many different ways. But it isn't just a feeling. It's an action.
