Mysteries of the Bible: Promises
What’s a covenant? How long does it last? Why does it matter today?
So, a covenant is just another way of talking about “God’s promises and our commitments”. When God makes a promise he keeps it and it lasts forever, that is, until he fulfills it.
God made five covenants in the bible. Here are three to get you thinking.
God promised many things to Abraham. He personally promised that He would make Abraham’s family in to a great nation and somehow, God would bring his blessing to all humanity through Abraham’s family, the Israelites.
The covenant with Moses gave us a set of laws or commandments to live by. Following them meant we would receive God’s blessing, and disobeying meant God’s anger. But, in the end God wouldn’t stay angry forever because of the new covenant.
The New Covenant is a promise made with everyone. In the New Covenant, Jesus promises to fulfill all the past covenants and by doing so, forgive all sin. He also asks God to send us a helper, the Holy Spirit, to guide us back to God.
SO, in the end God’s promises are bigger than our failures and His promises are everlasting, even today.
Think about that next time you open your bible.
