This series is lessons from Elijah. Learning through experience definitely makes an impression. We can all learn from hard knocks, but it’s a lot less painful to learn by example. First Corinthians 10:6 and 11 say that the experiences of those in the Bible were recorded for our examples. Elijah’s story is full of great examples, both good and bad.
06 Andrew continues his series on Lessons from Elijah.
17 (1 Kings 19:4) “…take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.” This is reason Elijah failed. It’s the reason he got into fear and ran from Jezebel, when he had already stood boldly in front of the king and the king’s armies. But, when he got to thinking that he was better than other people, and that God was using him because of some virtue or power of his, that’s when he failed. (Proverb 16:18)
10 If you ever find yourself thinking, “I can do all things”.., but you leave off the, “through Christ who strengthens me,” and you think it’s your power, it’s your might that’s causing things to work, it’s just a matter of time until you crash and burn. (Philippians 4:13) But, on the other hand, you can’t go around thinking you are incapable of do anything, because the truth is you’re never without Him. (Hebrews 13:5) So, in myself, I am nothing. In myself, I can do nothing. But, I am not in myself. I am in Christ Jesus, and through Christ, I can do all things. (Philippians 413; John 15:5) Both of these truths work together in balance.
16 There’s always a truth on one side, that we’re saved by grace (Ephesians 2:8), but then (James 2:24) you see that you’re not just saved by grace only, but by works. Those two truths do not contradict each other, but they compliment each other. When used together, like anchors, they keep you in perfect balance.
45 One of the greatest lessons I have learned from Elijah is that you are most vulnerable, after you have seen a great success, because you will tend to start taking credit for it.
36 God could’ve totally forsaken Elijah (1 Kings 19:5-8). That’s how a lot of people envision God. They see Him as a person who, if we don’t do everything right, He’s just going to forsake us. But, that’s not what the Scriptures teach. Here is Elijah (1 Kings 19:4-8) in total defeat, and in total retreat, when God said otherwise, in advance. Yet, God feeds Him supernaturally, and sends an angel to provide for him.
41 (1 Kings 17:4) “I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.” God didn’t send Elijah food directly to him. He sent it to where He told Elijah to go. The reason many of us aren’t seeing God’s provision in our lives is because we aren’t all there. We’ve got to go there. God doesn’t send provision to us first, and then send us to some place. He tells us where He wants us to go, and when we get there, the provision is found.
03 Elijah wasn’t where God told him to be. He wasn’t in his ‘place called there,’ and God is asking, ‘what are you doing here, Elijah?’ (1 Kings 19:9) Let me ask you that question. What are you doing where you are? Is that your place called there? Are you doing what God has told you to do, or have you, like Elijah, let fear affect you?
54 Everyone of us has a place called there. With some people, it may not be a physical place. The majority of us are in the wrong place spiritually. We may not be taking steps of faith, or extending ourselves. Some of us aren’t being bold, or confessing our faith.
49 The only people who are absolute failures are people who fail to do anything, simply out of fear. A person who tries to do something, and fails is really not a failure. It’s a learning process.
04 Elijah was in the wrong place. (1 Kings 19:4-9) Even though he was in the wrong place, God was still dealing with him mercifully.
02 I personally believe that Elisha wasn’t God’s first choice. He was God’s replacement for Elijah, and Elisha just fulfilled the things that God wanted Elijah to do.
40 When we get discouraged, and when we fail, we tend to let our emotions dominate us, and we speak out of our emotions things that we know are not true. We speak out of our feelings. Anytime you let your emotions control and dominate you, more than truth, you are in deception, and you are headed for failure. Part of growing up is you do what you know is true, and not what you feel.
