Olympic Winter Games: Anne Abernathy
As the XXIII Olympic Winter Games begin in South Korea, millions will witness the excitement of athletes eager to earn a coveted gold, silver, or bronze medal for their countries. Anne Abernathy made her first Olympic appearance at the 1988 Games in Calgary, the first woman from the Virgin Islands to compete in the Winter Olympics.
The public was unaware that she was being treated for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In fact, she overcame significant injuries in her sports career and successfully qualified for six Olympic games. In Path to Victory: A Winter Sports New Testament, Abernathy shared how Romans 8:26 helped her deal with the loss of her mother and Hebrews 12:1–12 was a passage important to her during difficult challenges.
