Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory - Episode 3 - Coming of Age
In this three-part special PBS series about Evangelicals in America, host Randall Balmer travels throughout the U.S. to uncover the richness, diversity, and energy of the Evangelical movement. In this final episode, Balmer explores Evangelicalism's coming of age in the 1970's to present day, looking at the confusion and ambivalence experienced by many Evangelicals as they try to come to terms with the entertainment, politics, wealth and values of the broader culture. In the mid-70's, after 50 years on the sidelines and immersed in their own subculture, Evangelicals plunged into politics with a vengeance. In the mid-80's they changed their minds about the corruptions of wealth, and demonstrated a willingness to appropriate commercial and acquistive values of the larger culture even while purveying a very conservative theology. American Evangelicalism today is fraught with tensions and contradictions as they emerge into the larger culture.
A three-part special PBS series of programs about Evangelicals in America. Host Randall Balmer traveled throughout the U.S. to uncover the richness, diversity, and energy of the Evangelical movement. The result is an intimate look at who the Evangelicals are, what they believe and what difference their faith makes in their lives. It also shows how they seek to protect their children from the corrupting influences of society and how they are trying to change the world. Also treated are emerging forms of Evangelicalism that suggest what their future may be like. This series makes an ideal six-week study to consider the diversity of Evangelical expression and how Christians are perceived by others. A sure-fire discussion starter!
