Introduction to the Gospel of Mark
You can basically divide Mark into two halves. The first half of the gospel focuses on Jesus as the Mighty Messiah and Son of God. Jesus performs powerful miracles demonstrating the authority of the Messiah. This first half of the gospel climaxes in Peter's confession in mark 8:29, as Peter declares that Jesus is the Messiah.
From that point on however, Jesus begins to predict His coming suffering and death. Mark's point is that Jesus is indeed the Mighty Messiah and Son of God, but he fulfills the messianic role in a unique and surprising way by suffering as an atoning sacrifice for sins.
The theme verse of the gospel could be Mark 10:45: "For the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve and to give His life as an atoning sacrifice for sins." The whole of the gospel then becomes a call to discipleship to be willing to take up your cross and follow Him.
