How to Stop Lying to Yourself | Jonathan Evans
When you look in the mirror, do you ignore what you see? When people make observations about where you can improve, do you jump on the defense and make excuses for why you don’t need to change? If you want to grow and experience what God has for you, you have to stop lying to yourself!
If you spend your life justifying everything you’re doing, you’re not giving yourself a chance to really grow. You have to look at yourself and really ask yourself who you are.
We want people to accept us for the way that we are, even if it goes against who God wants us to be. While I understand the statement, I also understand that it can come from a defensive position. Changing isn’t easy, and it’s easier to just remain the same. But is that what we really need? No! We have to learn how to tell ourselves the truth!
The Christian life isn’t about being independent, it’s about being dependent. You were raised to be independent. That’s what I’m doing for my kids. I’m raising them to go out on their own and do things on their own so that they can be mature in life. In the Christian life, being dependent proves how you are mature.
Paul had to put himself in a position of humility so that he could change and grow. If you keep lying to yourself and being defensive, you’re only stunting your growth. Look at what you’re dealing with in life. If you are not listening to your spouse when they are telling you that you can be a better communicator, how are you going to be a better spouse? If you are ignoring your kids when they say that they miss you because you’re always too busy for them, how are you going to be a better parent? People’s observations of you are not always correct, but if you’re so quick to defend yourself, how do you know they’re not true?
To achieve what God wants us to achieve, we have to tell ourselves the truth. It’s not easy to change, it’s all part of growing. We can’t ignore God’s word and expect to walk like Christ. Get off the defense and get on the offense! Stop lying to yourself!
Be steadfast, unmovable, and always know that the work of the Lord will not go in vain!
