It is sometimes argued that Christ descended into hell after he died.

The Apostles’ Creed says he “was crucified, dead, and buried, he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead.”

There's just one problem. The phrase “he descended into hell” does not occur in the Bible.

Where did the phrase "he descended into hell” come from? And what does the Bible say?

And if Jesus didn't descend to hell, then what exactly happened when he died?
