A Lamp of Their Own
Learning how to read and write in their own language has become extremely important for Manjak speakers in Senegal. But it hasn’t always been that way. Manjak speakers initially believed that the only path toward literacy was learning English or French. But now, they are learning how to read and write in their own language. As they do, they are gaining confidence and pride in their language. By learning to read and write Manjak, these speakers are also increasing their ability to read and write the national language of French, improve their economic situation, embrace their culture, and understand the Bible in a way that speaks to their hearts.
Wycliffe’s mission is to see a Bible translation program in progress in every language still needing one by 2025.
